Girl's After Surf Survival Kit--A Top 10 Guide

my essentials

I like the fresh feeling I get when I climb out of the water, but sometimes I just need a little something to freshen up after a session. I got an idea to put together a little kit for the time after some shredding. Here are some tips and products I've found useful and will put into a little kit myself!

  1. A cute bag - So before we begin, you're gonna need something to put all this in! I'm a girl/woman/babe/chick so needless to say, sometimes I like to have something cute. Even the toughest of nails will admit they like cute things. Anyway, I was on etsy and I found these cute pouches with so many cool fabrics that any person will find one that suits her style. They seem to run, quite literally, on the pouch size so I suggest getting those little airline bottles for the liquid portions of this kit to maximize space (or invest in a larger cosmetics bag).
  2. Cash - Don't carry too much (you don't want anyone to rob you), but keep enough with you for any parking meters or for some coffee/tea afterwards to warm up (If you're in Venice, I just recently discovered Cow's End with a friend. It's cash only so perfect for a drink!). I also had recently run out of wax and I stopped by a shop to buy wax and cash was perfect for that opportunity.
  3. Lip balm - I love Rosebud Perfume Co. lip balm. It always keeps my lips fresh, moist, and with just enough shine. I have the mint kind personally because it gives a little tingle. Rosebud salve also smells wonderful and a bargain for how much you get! Not to mention, if you have a special guy pal you like to kiss (or make out with, who are we kidding?), it's not gooey or messy enough to leave him feeling like you slathered him with sticky gloss. Sephora's description says, "This cult-favorite, multi-purpose lip balm soothes dry lips, calms and heals irritation, and soothes the sting of minor burns. Try dabbing on dry elbows or knees to condition, and relieve dryness. Also an excellent remedy for the treatment of diaper rash." Well, Oolala!
  4. Hair ties with grips - I just recently started purchasing hair ties with the grips on the inside (or coiled around). It keeps your wet hair up so much better than a regular hair tie and will prevent your hair from getting your dry clothes all wet.
  5. Face cleansing wipes - My face feel so dry after being in the salt water for so long. All you really have for the most part, once you get out of the water, are the beach showers. As you know, they aren't at all friendly with their jet streams (probably only suitable for getting sand out of your suit, feet, etc.) nor are they sanitary (who KNOWS who washed their... WHATEVER there last?). The next best thing would be to carry moist facial wipes to clean off all the grime, sweat, and sunblock off your face. And don't lie when you say you probably need them beforehand too to get any last night's make-up off your face (getting an itchy pink eye because some make-up got washed into your eye along with salt? ick).
  6. Waterproof mascara - I always feel better when I have some sort of mascara on. Call me superficial, unconfident, whatever. Mascara brings out your eyes! I love the regular version of LashBlast by Covergirl and I feel like no woman should be without a good waterproof mascara because maybe you'll want to go in the water again later that day? Or maybe take my example. I went surfing one day with my roommate and we went to a bar afterwards. We looked like (and at least I felt like) drowned rats. Quick pop to the CVS and got some mascara & concealer and we felt like new people! Basically, I never know where I will end up after a session and I'd rather be prepared and not look like a little homeless rascal/animal.
  7. Hair detangler - Salt water is brutal to your hair sometimes. It cakes it with salt and sometimes that look is just NOT what you're going for. Do you notice how your hair becomes so dreadlocked during and after you get out of the water? Get yourself a gentle hair detangler, like Johnson's No More Tangles, to condition and get your hair back into it's natural flow. Unless dreadlocks are the look you're going for!
  8. Sunblock - You should actually be putting this on beforehand to protect your skin! It's the largest organ on your body and you have to protect it. You can get aloe later for any spots you may have missed. I'm such a horrible person when it comes to sunblock. I'm one of those people that love to lay out and burrrrrrnnnnn. Or bake? I like to lay out is what I am saying. Usually sunblock is the last thing on my mind because I want to get as dark as possible. Although, later I will end up like the neighbor in There's Something About Mary and that is so not chic. Neutrogena has a lot of different SPF's depending on your preference (I think all the way up to SPF 80?!) so grab one so you're always protecting your face.
  9. Wide-tooth comb - For the times you're detangling, make sure you get a wide-tooth comb so you're not tearing through your hair. Make sure you spritz your hair down and start combing from the bottom up and prevent you ripping through your strands on the way down.
  10. Concealer - I sweaaaarrrrrr by MAC Select Cover-Up concealer. This concealer will cover the reddest spots and make your skin look flawless. Go to your local MAC counter and have them choose the right color for you. It may sound a little expensive for such a itty-bitty concealer tube ($16.50) but I've had mine for over 6 months (which I know, I know is NOT recommended, but I'm using it all up until it's gone).
Now put together your kits and let me know how they look! Do you have any products worth mentioning in a post-surf kit?
